Does Florida Require a Motorcycle License?

If you're new to the world of motorcycles, you might be wondering whether or not you need a license. Here in the state of Florida, it's required by law to have a motorcycle license in order to drive a motorcycle. This includes both two-wheel and three-wheel bikes whose motor is more than 50 cc. There are two different versions of  a motorcycle license that you can receive, depending on your other driving habits. If you already have a regular driver's license, then you can apply for what's called a "motorcycle endorsement" on your license, which will allow you to use the same license for both cars and motorcycles. If you don't have a driver's license already, then you can apply for a "Motorcycle Only" license, which will be exclusively for your motorcycle!

How Can I Get a FL Motorcycle Endorsement?

If you're interested in adding a motorcycle endorsement to your license, then you can get started on this process in just a few easy steps! First of all, you must be at least 16 years old, just like you would for a driver's license. Also, you must already possess a valid license, such as a Class D, or at minimum, a Class E operator's license. From there, you can complete a motorcycle training course with an authorized sponsor, such as the Basic RiderCourse (BRC), or Basic RiderCourse updated (BRCu). Make sure that you get your endorsement within one year of passing your course, or else you'll need to re-take the course. If you can present your proof of passing the course to a tax collector's office or driver's licensing office within the given grace period, then they can help you fill out the proper paperwork and pay the required fee. Then, they will provide you with your new license, complete with the motorcycle endorsement!

What is a Florida Motorcycle Only License?

No, you do not! If you don't have a driver's license already, you can still get approved to drive a motorcycle with a Motorcycle Only license! To start, you must be at least 16 years old, and minors under 18 must also have a Learner's License for at least one year, and have no traffic convictions. You'll start by taking the written test, the same as you would for your typical Class E driver's license. Next, you'll complete the BRC or BRCu, as we described above. Similarly, you'll have a one-year grace period in which your course is valid, and you'll need to bring proof of passing the course to your local licensing office, along with the proper ID and payment. From there, you'll be given a Motorcycle Only license, which will only be valid for motorcycle operation.
