Beginner's Three-Wheeled Motorcycles Riding Tips
Three-wheeled motorcycles may share a lot with their two-wheeled counterparts in terms of basic structure, but they are very different in terms of how they handle. Those who are used to riding a more typical motorcycle may actually have more trouble when behind the wheel of a trike. This guide from RIVA Motorsports has some tips on how to get better at riding a three-wheeled motorcycle.
Starting the Three-Wheeled Motorcycle
Starting a three-wheeled motorcycle is easy enough. First engage the brakes. Then you can hit the clutch and shift into first gear. Once that’s done, you can release the brakes and slowly build up speed until it’s time to release the clutch.
Shifting Gears
When it’s time to shift gears, drop the throttle and then engage the clutch. From there it’s as simple as shifting to your desired gear and letting go of the clutch. The process itself is very simple, but there’s a danger that you’ll lose control or cause a stall. That’s why you should always shift gears while traveling in a straight line if possible.
Turning A Three-Wheeled Motorcycle
Obviously, being able to turn your three-wheeled motorcycle is very important. Make sure that you’re slowing down before the turn to make things easier. Keep your speed constant throughout the turn, and only hit the throttle once the turn is complete. Sharp turns only make it more likely that you’ll lose control of your vehicle.
Stopping on a Three-Wheeled Motorcycle
Three-wheeled motorcycles are heavier than two-wheeled motorcycles, so they need more time to fully stop. It can take time to figure out how much time it takes to bring your trike to a full stop, so be patient. Avoid hard braking, as it can lead to your brakes locking up.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice makes perfect. The more you ride your three-wheeled motorcycle, the easier it will be to control everything. You may even need to find a vacant lot in which to go over the fundamentals.
